WHY ENTRANCE MAT SIZE MATTERS

A mat that is too small lets dirt walk around it, and a mat that does not fit the doorway leaves gaps where grit collects. Matrium cuts each mat to your exact dimensions, so it can fit wall to wall at a doorway. Getting the entrance mat size right before you order also keeps the quote accurate, because quotes are calculated per square metre and every order needs the mat dimensions.

THE FIVE MEASUREMENTS BEHIND EVERY ENTRANCE MAT SIZE

Take these five measurements for each door. Use a tape measure, write the figures in centimetres and keep a photo with them.

WRONG ENTRANCE MAT SIZE VERSUS A CORRECT FIT

Depth is part of the entrance mat size. The U.S. Access Board’s guide to the ADA Standards says changes in level up to 1/4 inch (about 6 mm) need no treatment, and changes up to 1/2 inch (about 13 mm) must be bevelled (floor and ground surfaces guide). Check the rules that apply in your country before you choose a thick loose-laid mat.

Too narrow
Visitors step around the mat and carry dirt straight onto the floor.

Too short
A short run gives soles little time to clean or dry before the interior floor.

Too thick
A mat that is thicker than the floor level allows can catch wheels and feet.

Full width
The mat covers the doorway from wall to wall, with no gaps where grit collects.

Several steps
Matrium’s guide is five or six steps of matting, or a run of two or three metres of spaghetti mat in the entrance zone.

Matched depth
The mat depth is chosen to suit the door, the recess and the traffic.
