A short guide to the entrance matting terms used on our pages

Recessed mat: a mat installed in a shallow well in the floor, so its surface sits level with the surrounding finish. Recessed installation is common in hotels, hospitals and airports because it removes tripping edges and lets trolleys roll across smoothly.

Surface-mounted mat: a mat placed on top of the existing floor, usually with ramped edges. It is the right choice for renovations where cutting the floor is not possible.
